35 Years Helping Persons Blind, Low Vision and Visually Impaired
I learned to program my subconscious when I was 20 years old and then enrolled at DeVry Institute of Technology. I earned straight A's and two B's using the system I developed and learned about electronics, computers and programming in Assembly langauge.
I worked 3 jobs in high tech from 1984 to 1989, and then founded my first company Share Technology in 1989. Share Technology helped persons with disabilities and specialized in helping the Blind.
I first volunteered in 1988 and that was to help a child who was in a wheel chair. He had a switch which was broken and I opened it up and had to solder a wire to fix it. After I fixed it, I will never forget what happened, as his mother hugged me, his nurse thanked me, and the child was full of smiles and very happy. Right there, right then, I learned the power of volunteering, which lead me to create Share Technology which was a name I used to call myself as I volunteered. I traveled to Wichita, Kansas to Jefferson City, Missouri to St. Joseph, Missouri and many more homes as I reached out and helped a lot of people.
As I volunteered and helped persons with disabilities, I found a great way to use my love and skills for computers by adapting computers so they could use them.
I worked with persons of all disabilities and modified and adjusted technology so they could use it. I learned in the early 90’s that the technology for persons with disabilities was ahead of the curve as speech synthesis, text to speech, scan and read, voice recognition, to name a few, were not used in the mainstream. Persons with disabilities and the assistive technology they used were early adopters to what we use on tablets and smartphones today.
1993 invented the Laptop Reader for the Blind
In 1993 with the help of the director of RSB - Missouri Rehabilitation Service for the Blind, we used a CompuAdd laptop running Microsoft DOS and Windows 3.11, along with an Artic transport hardware synthesizer and a copy of Artic Win Vision screen reader and created the Laptop Reader for the blind.
Sold $6.2 million of CompuAdd computers 1990 to 1993
